Our certification value:
The value of professional certification is essential. If a company hires a risk manager, quality manager or safety manager, the qualifications of the candidate are important to them.

Compliance to standard:
Certification is proof of compliance to a particular standard. It proves that the standard’s requirements and principles have been fulfilled and validated with adequate consistency, professionalism and impartiality. BCOSP accredited certifications are evidence of strict compliance with Standards and high quality.

BCOSP is an accredited Personnel Certification Body by the American Certification Service – Global Program (ACS-GP) under ISO/IEC 17024 – Requirements for bodies operating certification of persons.

International Recognition:
Our certifications are accredited through the ISO/IEC 17024 standards for personnel certification programs that are internationally recognized as world based professional practice. 
Our verification criteria are based on this ISO and industrial standards.

Certification Process

  • Candidates are responsible for their own study and preparation for the examination.
  • We set no specific courses as part of the certification process.
  • Each certification has specific education and a set of experience requirements.
  • To determine which credential is right for you, verify all eligibility requirements for the different certifications.
  • Candidates have to contact us and schedule an exam.
  • Results will be communicated by email within a period of 6 to 8 weeks from your examination date.
  • BCOSP certifications are valid for three years.
  • To maintain the certification, the applicant shall apply for re-certification every three years. They have to demonstrate that he/she is still performing tasks that are related to the certification.
  • Certified professionals shall pay an annual fee.

Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS®)

Certified Safety Specialist (COSS) is a safety practitioner who specializes in a specific area in the safety profession. The concentration must be in a definite area such as fire safety, transportation safety, nuclear safety, hazardous materials, product safety, health care safety, electrical safety, oil well drilling & servicing etc. He/she must be able to perform both the technical and management work of safety in his/her respective field in order to secure the most effective results through and with other people. He/she performs all of the technical and management work required of the safety position.

COSS Application Criteria

  • Will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in any field or professional qualification in occupational health and safety and other approved disciplines by the Board.
  • Will have five (5) years of safety experience where safety is at least 50%, preventative*, professional level with depth of safety duties.
  • Must pass the COSS examination
